Fire Prevention and Education Programs
This City of Hurst's Fire Prevention and Education Programs are directed by the Fire Marshal's Office. The Fire Marshal, Battalion Chief Howard Hill and a Fire Inspector staff the Fire Prevention and Education division. With the help of the Operations personnel the following programs are completed each year:
Fire Education
The Fire Marshal's Office and shift personnel teach Fire Safety
education to over 4000 students in the Hurst Schools in October
of each year. The Fire Safety Program for the schools consist of
classroom lectures about home fire safety and demonstrating firefighting
equipment. During Fire Prevention Week, the students are challenged
to create a fire safety poster that is judged and ribbons are awarded
for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place . The first place winners are then judged
and awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ribbons. The Fire Department
also has it's annual Open House. This event is an opportunity for
the citizens of Hurst to meet the firefighters, examine the equipment
and learn about fire safety. Mall displays and other events are
also happening during the month of October. We also teach in-service
fire safety programs such as, the use of portable fire extinguishers,
evacuation plans, senior citizens programs, CPR, and more. We are
members of the Metroplex Fire Safety Educators Association.
Code Enforcement
One of the primary duties of this division is the enforcement of
Fire and Building Codes concerning life safety. The Fire Marshal's
office is responsible for plan review and inspection of new construction
and remodeling of existing buildings with regards to fire protection
systems. Compliance is enforced with on-site inspections and system
testing before a Certificate of Occupancy is issued. On-duty personnel
inspect over 1,700 occupancies annually to identify code violations
in need of correction. Some codes used by the Fire Department include
the International Fire Code - 2003, International Building Code,
NFPA, and others. We are members of the Fire Prevention Association
of North Texas (FPANT).
Investigations
The Fire Marshal's office is responsible for the investigation of
all fires or explosions in the city to determine cause and origin.
