Personnel Information
Fire Chief:
The Fire Chief directs the administrative and operational activities
of the department, including all facets of personnel management,
policy and procedure and safety. In addition, the Fire Chief
- Directs and evaluates the activities of the Assistant Fire Chief,
Shift Commanders, Fire Prevention Officer, Administrative Assistant,
and Administrative Secretary
- Directs the City's fire defenses, responds to, and takes command
at major emergencies
- Directs the maintenance, repair, improvement, and replacement
of fire fighting equipment
- Conducts studies for the City Manager on various phases of departmental
operations
- Prepares annual budget estimates and administers the budget
after adoption
- Represents the City at meetings and functions for the purpose
of promoting fire safety
Assistant Fire Chief:
The Assistant Fire Chief supervises the department in performance
of and compliance with departmental rules, regulations and standard
operating procedures. In addition, The Assistant Fire Chief :
- Responds to and takes charge of calls as set forth in department
rules and regulations
- Directs allocation of manpower and equipment for maximum effectiveness
- Supervises the evaluation of personnel
- Assists in planning departmental operations with respect to
personnel, training and emergency medical services
- Supervises the maintenance and repair of all apparatus, small
equipment and buildings
- Assists in the preparation of the department's budget
- Acts as a principle representative of the department dealing
with the general public
Fire Marshal:
The Fire Marshal of Hurst is responsible for ensuring that the
citizens of Hurst are provided with community services that decrease
the likelihood of a loss of life or property from a fire or other
hazardous condition. Duties of the Fire Marshal include:
- Obtaining a working knowledge of the Uniform Fire Codes, Codes
of the City of Hurst, National Fire Protection Association, Fire
Alarm Codes, Sprinkler Codes, and Plane Reviews
- Inspections of occupancies to provide compliance of codes, Certificate
of Occupancy, testing of systems and notification of fire hazards
- Investigating, and analyzing fires, explosions and hazardous
conditions and rendering opinions as to the origin, cause, responsibility,
mitigation, or prevention of such incidents
- Conducting criminal investigations related to prosecution of
arsonists and Internal Affairs investigations
- Writing reports of incidents, providing reports to public and
insurance companies
- Attending meetings such as gas pipeline, construction, codes,
investigations, fire prevention, fire safety education, weapons
of mass destruction, plan review, and other meeting as needed
or assigned by the Fire Chief
- Attending EMS, Fire Operations, and Police continuing education
classes
- Maintaining a working knowledge of the Texas Criminal Laws
- Maintaining, supplying, and installing smoke detectors and batteries.
- Responding to one alarm chemical spills or gas leaks, bomb threats,
and performing as assigned at emergency incidents.
- Maintaining supply of fire safety education material to be given
out at functions such as Open House, Fire Safety Week at schools
and other Fire Department supported functions
- Answering prevention telephone line and other lines as needed.
- Implementing the Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention Program and
overseeing programs such as Fire Prevention Month of October for
our public schools
- Testing of smoke detectors in multi - family dwellings
Fire Inspector:
Duties of the Fire Inspector include:
- Maintenance of computer database for each commercial occupancy
- Performance of annual fire hazard occupancy inspections of over
1700 occupancies in Hurst
- Performance of re-inspections for all hazards reported
- Interpretation and enforcement of code for hazards reported
- Testing of fire protection systems
- Inspection of all new commercial occupancies
- Plan review of new construction
- Investigation and photography for fire scenes
- Coordinate fire prevention education programs in October for
all elementary schools
